01 Sophie’s phone
At 6:42, Sophie checked her phone. A minute later, she put down her glass and walked out.
SATURDAY · 6:42 PM
From table six, it looked like a family falling apart. Nobody at table six had read the messages.
02 The wedding album
The photographer took this just before dinner. Later, everyone noticed the empty seat.

6:37 pm. Five minutes before the message.
Inside Sophie’s bag
“Final callback. Saturday, 7:30 pm.”
A script. A pair of flat shoes. And a note in Maya’s handwriting.
The question wasn’t why Sophie had left. It was who had helped her go.
03 Maya’s side
For years, Sophie had put other people first. She was about to turn down the audition she had waited a decade for.
Maya found out the night before the wedding. So she packed a bag.
Soph,
You helped me choose the flowers, the dress, and the person I want to be.
You do not have to miss your own life to prove you love mine.
Go. I’ll save you the corner piece.
Your very bossy sister,
Maya x
Maya kept the chair empty on purpose. Her sister still belonged there, even when she needed to be somewhere else.
The final page 9:16 pm
Sophie made it to the audition. Maya had packed her script, Theo had arranged the car, and neither of them had told the other guests.
She came back in flat shoes. The band played something terrible. The sisters danced anyway.
From table six, it looked like nothing had happened.
For once, table six was almost right.
